German perspective on historical fencing competitions

I recently wrote a post about the evidence we have on Bolognese competitive fencing. The post generated a large amount of discussion on Facebook, and I’m planning on gathering the ideas presented there and follow-up with another post about the subject in the future. This will take some time though as I have other posts being written right now as well.

Meanwhile Roger Norling of HROARR wrote a beautiful post on the German Fechtschule tradition, and how that should be taken into account in modern day HEMA tournaments. I strongly suggest you read the article, and check out all the other cool things at HROARR as well. Roger’s post ties well into the discussion of Bolognese competitions and some of the ideas presented are exactly what I’ve been thinking as well. I sense that something grand will emerge from these discussions!
